District Governor’s September Message - I find it hard to comprehend that Licia and I have completed 2 months of our 12 months as your DG. PDGs told us that the year flies and it will be one of the best years of our lives and a rewarding time. It certainly has been busy and enjoyable experience that looks likely to continue for the rest of the Lions year. Visits to the clubs are a pleasant experience meeting dedicated and hardworking Lions and learning of the different ways that each club helps their community. There are projects that have been in operation for decades and others that have started more recently and very innovative. Fundraising projects are diverse for example; cardboard recycling, battery collection, mini lotteries, community phonebooks, publishing books, book library and raffles for petrol vouchers that are redeemable around Australia. Is there an innovative project that your club operates? Let me know. The hospitality and friendship shown to myself, VDGs Anne and Gavan is first class. It can be daunting to walk into a room and meeting people for the first time, but knowing that we will be welcomed as we share the same values makes each visit a pleasure. Without exception the visits have been exceptional and we have finished with a wider group of friends. Soon all the clubs will be receiving information on the position that our District faces with membership. When this information is available, please read it and offer your comments and ideas, which will be most welcome. Lions in our clubs do an amazing job, and that’s not in doubt. I do challenge you to review how we organize meetings, projects and the methods we use to promote ourselves as Lions. If we see that improvements are possible, I ask you to just take the risk and try some new ways. I am not saying that our practices are poor, but in our current environment there is new technology and changing demographics that we should realise and use to our advantage. DG Roger Thomas
